Troubleshooting (4)
Feeling dizzy or faint during the fast: Sit down immediately. Move to a ventilated area. If symptoms are severe, halachah permits drinking small amounts of water in measured intervals (shiurim) — consult with a rabbi in advance about the amounts. Nursing mothers and those with medical conditions should get a psak before Yom Kippur.
Ezra having a meltdown during a quiet Yom Kippur: Take Ezra outside — Jerusalem streets are empty and peaceful on Yom Kippur. Walk with the stroller. Fresh air and the novelty of empty streets often calm toddlers. Pack snacks for the walk.
Caffeine withdrawal headache during the fast: Gradually reduce caffeine intake in the 3-5 days before Yom Kippur. Take Tylenol/paracetamol before the fast begins (not on an empty stomach). If unbearable, consult a rabbi about taking medication with minimal water.
Break-fast food has gone bad due to being prepared too early: Keep dairy and fish items properly refrigerated. Prepare shelf-stable items first (baked goods, dry items). Assemble perishable platters (smoked fish, cream cheese) in the fridge and just move to the table at break-fast time.
