Jump-Starting a Flat Battery
🚗 Vehicle v1.0 Updated 2026-03-16
Jump-Starting a Flat Battery
Signs of a Flat Battery
- Engine cranks slowly or not at all when turning the key
- Dashboard lights dim or don't come on
- Clicking sound when turning the ignition
- Central locking doesn't respond
- Interior lights are very dim or off
What You Need
- Jump leads (jumper cables) — keep a set in the boot
- A second vehicle with a working battery (donor car)
- OR a portable jump starter pack
Jump-Start Procedure (Using Another Car)
Setup
- Park the donor car close enough for cables to reach, but cars must not touch
- Both cars: engine off, keys out, handbrake on
- Turn off all electrical loads in both cars (lights, radio, A/C)
Cable Connection Order (CRITICAL)
Connect in this exact order:
- RED clamp → dead battery POSITIVE (+) terminal
- RED clamp → donor battery POSITIVE (+) terminal
- BLACK clamp → donor battery NEGATIVE (−) terminal
- BLACK clamp → unpainted metal on the dead car's engine (earth point — bolt, bracket, or engine mount). NOT the dead battery's negative terminal (risk of spark near battery gases)
Starting
- Start the donor car first; let it idle for 2–3 minutes
- Try to start the dead car
- If it doesn't start after 5 seconds of cranking, wait 30 seconds and try again
- If it starts: leave both cars running for a few minutes
Disconnection Order (Reverse)
Remove in this exact order:
- BLACK clamp from the dead car's earth point
- BLACK clamp from the donor battery
- RED clamp from the donor battery
- RED clamp from the (previously) dead battery
After Jump-Starting
- Drive for at least 20–30 minutes to recharge the battery (highway driving is better than idling)
- Do NOT turn off the engine until you've driven sufficiently
- If the battery dies again soon, it likely needs replacing
- Get the battery tested at a garage — heat kills batteries, and Israeli summers are brutal on them
Using a Portable Jump Starter
- Ensure the pack is charged (check indicator)
- Connect RED to battery POSITIVE (+)
- Connect BLACK to battery NEGATIVE (−) or engine earth point
- Turn on the jump starter
- Start the car
- Disconnect in reverse order once running
Safety Rules
- Never let the clamp ends touch each other while connected to any battery
- Never jump-start a visibly damaged, cracked, or leaking battery — risk of explosion
- Keep faces and loose clothing away from the battery during connection
- If the battery is frozen (unlikely in Israel), do not attempt to jump-start
Notes
Battery life in Israel: Extreme heat degrades batteries faster. Expect 2.5–4 years lifespan. If your battery is over 3 years old, get it tested before summer and before long trips.
