Sukkot Preparation

Check metal/wood frame for rust or damage. Verify all connectors, bolts, and wall panels are present. Replace any worn components before assembly.

Begin assembly right after Yom Kippur — tradition to start immediately. Ensure the sukkah fits the balcony dimensions and doesn't obstruct neighbors. Check that schach area is open to the sky (no permanent overhang).

Walls must be sturdy enough to withstand normal wind. Use cable ties, clips, or rope to secure canvas/fabric walls to the frame. Jerusalem can be windy in October.

Schach must be detached plant material: bamboo mats, palm branches, or wooden slats. Must provide more shade than sun. Should not be so dense that rain can't get through. Available from schach vendors throughout Jerusalem.

Secure all loose materials at Ezra's height. Check for sharp edges on frame. Ensure decorations are hung high enough. Block any gaps between walls and railings where a child could slip through.

String lights (set on timer for Yom Tov), paper chains, fabric decorations, posters of Jerusalem and Israel. Hang from schach supports — not from the schach itself.

Hang any artwork from gan or that you make at home. Toddler handprint decorations, simple paper chains, or coloring pages of sukkot themes.

Folding table and chairs sized for the balcony sukkah. Tablecloth, basic place settings. Weather-appropriate seating — cushions for chilly evenings.

Transparent plastic sheeting or a retractable tarp for rain — must be removable and not left as permanent schach covering during meals. Jerusalem October weather can include sudden rain showers.

Buy from the Four Species markets — Jerusalem has major shuk options at Machane Yehuda, Kikar Safra, and neighborhood stands. Inspect etrog for blemishes, lulav for straightness, hadasim for triple leaves, aravot for freshness.

Attach 3 hadasim on right and 2 aravot on left of lulav using the palm-leaf holder or rings. Store upright in water.

Keep etrog in its protective box with flax padding. Store at room temperature. Check daily for any developing blemishes. Replace aravot mid-Sukkot as they dry out — available at local shops.

Bracha on lulav first day includes Shehecheyanu. Wave in six directions. Children should be encouraged to participate — let Ezra hold the lulav with help.

Multiple Yom Tov meals plus Shabbat Chol HaMoed. In Israel, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are the same day. Plan at least 8-10 festive meals total.

Cook in the kitchen, serve in the sukkah. Use covered dishes and trays. One-pot meals, stews, and soups work well. Keep a warming tray in the sukkah if possible.

Portable high chair or clip-on seat for the sukkah table. Keep baby food, bibs, and wipes accessible. Women and small children are exempt from sukkah but still nice to include.

Sukkot is a hospitality-focused holiday. Coordinate with friends and family. Jerusalem community is very active with Sukkot invitations — both hosting and being hosted.

Jerusalem options: Sukkot events at the Kotel, Birkat Kohanim (priestly blessing), Old City walks, parks, and nature reserves. Many venues have special Sukkot programming. Book in advance — Chol HaMoed is peak tourist season.

Massive communal priestly blessing held during Chol HaMoed Sukkot at the Western Wall. Arrive very early for a good spot. Bring stroller, water, sun protection, and snacks for Ezra.

Plan which shul to attend for hakafot. Bring flags for Ezra (traditional for children). Evening and morning hakafot — coordinate childcare shifts. Many Jerusalem neighborhoods have outdoor hakafot with music and dancing.

Take down schach first, then walls, then frame. Clean and dry all components before storage. Label storage boxes for easy setup next year.
