Spider Bites

SOP-FA042 · 🩺 First Aid

First aid for spider bites in children in Israel, focusing on the two venomous species: Brown Recluse (Loxosceles rufescens) and Black Widow (Latrodectus tredecimguttatus). Children are more vulnerable due to greater venom effect per body weight, faster onset of systemic symptoms, and inability to report the initial bite. Emphasises wound care, monitoring for systemic symptoms, and urgent hospital evaluation. Apply when: When a child has been bitten or suspected bitten by a spider. Treat all spider bites in children with medical evaluation due to the greater venom-to-body-weight ratio. Brown recluse bites are often painless initially with effects appearing hours later. Black widow bites cause pain within minutes. Common locations where children encounter spiders in Israel: wardrobes, shoes, stored clothing (brown recluse); gardens, stone walls, undisturbed outdoor areas (black widow).
