Floor Sweeping & Mopping
Purpose
Keep floors clean and safe, particularly important with Ezra crawling and playing on the floor. Israeli homes are almost entirely tiled, making regular mopping essential.
Frequency
| Task | Frequency | Priority Areas |
|---|---|---|
| Quick sweep | Daily | Kitchen, dining area, Ezra's play area |
| Full sweep | Every 2 days | All rooms |
| Spot mop | As needed | Spills, sticky spots, kitchen after cooking |
| Full mop | 2x per week | All tiled floors |
| Deep scrub | Monthly | Grout lines, corners, under furniture |
Procedure
Daily Quick Sweep
- Grab broom or cordless vacuum
- Focus on high-traffic and baby areas:
- Kitchen floor (food crumbs)
- Dining area under table and highchair
- Ezra's primary play area
- Entrance (tracked-in dirt)
- Sweep debris into dustpan and dispose
Full Mopping (מגב)
Equipment:
- Israeli squeegee mop (מגב ספוגי) — standard for tile floors
- Bucket with warm water
- Floor cleaner (baby-safe preferred)
Steps:
- Sweep or vacuum all floors first — mopping over crumbs makes a mess
- Fill bucket with warm water and floor cleaner
- Start from the room farthest from the entrance
- Work in sections, overlapping strokes
- Pay attention to: under the dining table, kitchen in front of stove and sink, bathroom floors, Ezra's play area
- Mop yourself toward the door — don't mop yourself into a corner
- Allow floors to air dry; open windows if weather permits
- Rinse mop head thoroughly after use; hang to dry
Spot Cleaning
For immediate spills or messes:
- Blot liquid spills with paper towel first
- Wipe with damp cloth or mop
- For sticky residue: warm water with a drop of dish soap
- Dry the area — wet tile is a slip hazard, especially for Ezra
Baby Safety Notes
- Never leave wet floors unattended while Ezra is mobile — tiles become very slippery
- Use baby-safe floor cleaners — Ezra's hands and face are on the floor constantly
- Check for small objects during sweeping — coins, bottle caps, food pieces are choking hazards
- Consider a quick crawl-path sweep before putting Ezra down to play
Balcony / Mirpeset
Israeli balconies collect dust quickly:
- Sweep weekly
- Mop monthly or after dust storms (sharav)
- Check drain isn't blocked
- Hose down if heavily soiled (check neighbors' laundry below first)
If Something Goes Wrong
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Grout is discolored | Scrub with baking soda paste and old toothbrush |
| Floor is sticky after mopping | Too much cleaner — mop again with plain water |
| Tile cracked | Cover with rug temporarily; report to landlord |
| Mop smells | Soak head in vinegar water for 30 min; replace if persistent |
| Dust storm (sharav) residue | Close windows; wait for storm to pass; then full sweep + mop |
Notes
Israeli Context: Tiled floors throughout the house mean mopping is the primary floor cleaning method. The squeegee mop (מגב) is the standard tool. Most Israelis mop at least twice a week.
Tip: Keep a pair of house slippers (נעלי בית) by the door to reduce dirt tracked through the house.
