Purim Preparation

Jerusalem (walled city) observes Shushan Purim on 15 Adar. Most of Jerusalem proper keeps Shushan Purim. Check if your neighborhood is within the walled-city boundaries — some peripheral areas keep 14 Adar.

One parent attends the night reading, the other goes to a different minyan or the morning reading. Some shuls offer women's readings or family-friendly readings with shorter breaks.

Buy or make graggers. For Ezra: soft fabric graggers or small shakers that are baby-safe. Avoid small parts or excessively loud noisemakers near the baby's ears.

Snacks, quiet toys, pacifier, small board books. Sit near the exit for easy departure if Ezra gets fussy. Feed and change before the reading starts.

Three brachos before the night reading (al mikra megillah, she'asa nissim, shehecheyanu). Morning: same first two, shehecheyanu only if not said at night. Listen carefully — must hear every word.

Minimum requirement: 2 different ready-to-eat food items to at least 1 person. Jerusalem custom is to send generously to friends, neighbors, and community. Plan quantity based on your list.

Classic hamantaschen fillings: poppy seed, chocolate, halva, date, lotus. Jerusalem bakeries sell by the kilo. Homemade is a nice touch — bake with Ezra helping (supervised mess).

Include at least 2 different bracha categories (e.g., mezonot pastry + fruit or candy). Add a festive Purim theme. Reusable containers or decorative bags.

Map out an efficient route through the neighborhood. Combine with Purim day walks. In Jerusalem, many people hand-deliver on foot — plan the stroller route.

Clear a table or counter space. Many packages will arrive throughout the day. Sort immediately — check for items that need refrigeration. Keep treats out of Ezra's unsupervised reach.

Israeli Purim is a major costume event — adults and children dress up. Plan early as popular costumes sell out. Jerusalem costume shops cluster in the city center and Geula neighborhood.

Avoid masks (choking hazard, scary), small accessories, loose strings, or anything covering nose/mouth. Soft fabric costumes work best. Ensure easy diaper access.

Use hypoallergenic, non-toxic face paint for Ezra. Test on a small skin area first. Keep makeup simple — toddlers will try to rub it off. Avoid glitter near eyes.

Festive meat meal traditionally held in the afternoon. In Jerusalem (Shushan Purim), the seudah is on 15 Adar. Include kreplach (traditional Purim food), wine, and festive dishes.

Coordinate with friends or community for a group seudah. If hosting, plan seating, food quantities, and timing. Start early enough to finish before Shabbat if it's a Friday.

Small portions of chicken, vegetables, challah. Avoid wine/grape juice overflow near the baby. Have familiar foods ready in case Ezra is overwhelmed by the festive atmosphere.

The mitzvah involves drinking more than usual. Coordinate with Hannah so one parent remains fully alert for Ezra's care at all times. Drink moderately and responsibly.

Minimum: give to 2 poor people on Purim day. In Jerusalem, collectors go door-to-door throughout the day. Keep cash and coins ready by the front door.

Many Jerusalem charities run Purim campaigns. Donate online or through shul collection. Popular: Kupat Ha'ir, Vaad HaRabbanim, local community funds.

Teaching tzedakah early. Have a small bag of coins Ezra can hand to people who come to the door. Supervised — coins are a choking hazard.
