Both Parents Sick — Emergency Childcare Plan

🏥 Medical v1.0

Purpose

When both Daniel and Hannah are sick simultaneously and unable to provide full care for Ezra, follow this procedure to ensure Ezra's safety and wellbeing while both parents recover.

When to Activate This Plan

Activate when both of the following are true:

  • Both parents are too unwell to maintain normal childcare routines (high fever, vomiting, severe fatigue, etc.)
  • Neither parent can safely carry or supervise Ezra alone

Immediate Actions (First 30 Minutes)

1. Assess Who Is Less Sick

One parent is almost always slightly more functional. That person becomes the lead parent for this period. The other rests.

2. Secure Ezra's Immediate Safety

  • Move Ezra to a safe, baby-proofed area (playpen, crib, or contained room)
  • Ensure he has water/milk and snacks appropriate for his age
  • Put on familiar TV/music if needed to keep him settled

3. Call for Backup

Contact people in this order until someone can come:

Tier 1 — Local Help (Jerusalem)

  • Friends or neighbors who know Ezra — ask for even 2-3 hours of relief
  • Regular babysitter — even on short notice, offer premium rate

Tier 2 — Family (Remote)

Note: Family can help remotely by arranging local services, ordering food delivery, or talking to Ezra on video call to give you a break.

Tier 3 — Professional Help

  • Call Kupat Cholim nurse hotline for medical advice on managing while sick
  • Consider hiring a temporary nanny through an agency for 1-2 days

Simplified Routines

When both parents are sick, survival mode is acceptable. Lower standards temporarily:

Feeding

  • Pre-prepared food, pouches, and simple snacks are fine
  • Formula/milk takes priority over solid food variety
  • Use disposable dishes to minimize cleanup
  • Order delivery if needed (Wolt, 10bis)

Sleep

  • Stick to nap times as closely as possible — sleep is your biggest ally
  • Ezra's sleep schedule protects your recovery time
  • It's OK if bedtime is slightly early

Hygiene

  • Quick wipe-downs instead of full baths
  • Fresh diaper is the priority
  • Skip non-essential grooming

Entertainment

  • Screen time limits can be relaxed temporarily
  • Safe independent play in contained areas
  • Rotate toys to maintain interest

Medication Management

For Parents

  • Take turns medicating so at least one parent is functional at all times
  • Stagger fever reducers (paracetamol/ibuprofen) between parents
  • Stay hydrated — keep water bottles by bedside and sofa
  • Daniel: If sick with respiratory illness, monitor asthma closely. Keep rescue inhaler nearby. Illness can trigger exacerbation.

For Ezra (If Also Sick)

  • Follow the fever response SOP for Ezra's medications
  • If all three family members are ill, escalate to Tier 2/3 backup immediately
  • A household where all caregivers are sick is a genuine emergency — don't hesitate to ask for help

Shift System

If no outside help is available, run shifts:

Time Block Lead Parent Other Parent
6:00-10:00 Parent A Resting
10:00-14:00 Parent B Resting
14:00-18:00 Parent A Resting
18:00-22:00 Parent B Resting
Overnight Whoever is more functional Sleep

Swap roles if one parent's condition changes. The key: someone is always "on" even if they're operating at 50%.

When to Seek Medical Help for Yourselves

Call your doctor or go to Terem if:

  • Fever persists above 39°C for more than 24 hours
  • You are too weak to safely hold or carry Ezra
  • Symptoms are worsening, not improving after 48 hours
  • Daniel: Any signs of asthma exacerbation — wheezing, chest tightness, rescue inhaler not helping (see Asthma Response SOP)
  • Either parent has vomiting/diarrhea AND cannot keep fluids down for 12+ hours

Recovery Phase

As you start recovering:

  1. The first parent to feel better takes a longer shift
  2. Gradually return to normal routines over 2-3 days
  3. Don't rush — relapsing means another round of this plan
  4. Restock medications and supplies after you recover
  5. Thank anyone who helped — maintain the support network

Supplies to Keep Stocked

Maintain a "sick day kit" to avoid needing to leave the house:

  • Paracetamol + Ibuprofen (adult doses)
  • Children's fever reducer (appropriate for Ezra's age/weight)
  • Electrolyte solution (for adults and pediatric)
  • Tissues, thermometer, pulse oximeter
  • Easy food: crackers, soup, rice, bananas, toast
  • Ezra's preferred snacks and formula/milk supply for 3+ days
  • Daniel's rescue inhaler — always accessible, never in the go bag when sick at home
