Hypothermia
SOP-FA034 · 🩺 First Aid
First aid for hypothermia in children in Israel, emphasising removal from cold, gentle rewarming, ABC assessment, and urgent hospital transport. Children are at higher risk due to immature thermoregulation, higher surface-area-to-body-mass ratio, and smaller body mass. Apply when: When a child shows signs of hypothermia (core body temperature below 35 degrees C). Signs include shivering (may be absent in infants), cold pale skin, confusion, slurred speech, coordination loss, lethargy, and progressive organ dysfunction. Infants may show bright red cold skin, low energy, and weak cry. Infants and young children are at particular risk due to underdeveloped thermoregulation, immobility, and high surface-area-to-volume ratio.
