Domestic Fire Response
🛡️ Home Safety v1.0
Domestic Fire Response
Immediate Actions (First 30 Seconds)
- Alert everyone — shout "FIRE!" loudly throughout the home
- Grab Ezra if he is in the room or nearby
- Get out — leave via the nearest safe exit; do NOT stop to collect belongings
- Close doors behind you as you leave (slows fire spread)
- Call 102 (Fire & Rescue) from outside the building
Do NOT attempt to fight the fire if it is larger than a waste-paper basket or if smoke is thick.
Using the Fire Blanket
The fire blanket is stored in the kitchen.
- Pull the tabs to release the blanket from its container
- Hold the blanket in front of you as a shield (protects hands and body)
- Lay the blanket gently over the fire — do NOT throw it
- Turn off the heat source if you can reach the knob safely
- Leave the blanket in place for at least 15 minutes
- Do NOT lift the blanket to check — re-ignition is common
Best For
- Stovetop fires (oil, pan, pot)
- Small fires on countertops or in ovens
- Wrapping around a person whose clothing is on fire
Using the CO₂ Extinguisher
The CO₂ extinguisher is located near the kitchen / hallway.
PASS Method
- Pull the pin
- Aim at the base of the fire (not the flames)
- Squeeze the handle
- Sweep side to side at the base
Important Notes
- CO₂ extinguishers work on electrical fires and flammable liquid fires
- Do NOT use on cooking oil fires (use the fire blanket instead)
- Hold the horn by the grip — the horn gets extremely cold and can cause frostbite
- Effective range is approximately 1–2 metres
- The extinguisher lasts about 10–15 seconds — be precise
Cooking Fire Specifics
- Oil/grease fire on stovetop: Turn off heat → cover with fire blanket or lid. NEVER use water.
- Oven fire: Turn off oven, keep door closed, let it suffocate
- Microwave fire: Turn off and unplug, keep door closed
After the Fire
- Do NOT re-enter the building until the fire service says it is safe
- If anyone has burns, run cool (not cold) water over the burn for 20 minutes
- Ventilate the apartment thoroughly once safe to re-enter
- Have the extinguisher professionally recharged or replaced after any use
- Replace the fire blanket after any use
