Assess the child's consciousness and ability to swallow, administer fast-acting sugar using the Rule of 15 (10g for children under 6), and call 101 for severe hypoglycemia, seizures, loss of consciousness, or signs of diabetic ketoacidosis. When in doubt, give sugar. Apply when: Child known or suspected to have diabetes is showing signs of hypoglycemia (paleness, sweating, trembling, rapid heartbeat, irritability, behavioural changes, confusion, decreased consciousness, seizures) or hyperglycemia/DKA (excessive thirst, frequent urination, vomiting, abdominal pain, rapid deep breathing, fruity-smelling breath, lethargy). Also applies when a child with a known diabetes diagnosis experiences sudden behavioural changes in a school or gan setting.
