Choking

Back blows and chest thrusts for choking infants (under 1 year); abdominal thrusts (Heimlich) for choking children (1-8 years); transition to CPR if victim becomes unresponsive. Apply when: Child or infant is choking: inability to speak, cry, or make sounds; weak or absent cough; difficulty breathing with visible chest retractions; bluish skin colour (cyanosis); high-pitched wheezing. Note: young children may NOT grasp their throats (the universal choking sign).
